Kawasaki Manufacturing Motors Selects UKM

(Kulpsville, PA) Kawasaki Manufacturing Motors, a division of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, has selected United Knitting Machine Co. Inc. (UKM) to manufacture (340) carsets of heated side door thresholds for PA-5 subway cars being built by Kawasaki for the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation of New York.

The new cars are targeted to replace 30 to 35 year old vehicles currently used for service between Lower Manhattan and New Jersey.  UKM has also secured the order to manufacture the end door thresholds.

Production is expected to begin in late 2007 and run through 2009.

The contract amount was undisclosed.

Previously announced was a separate combined award from Kawasaki and the French car builder Alstom, for a total of (660) carsets of heated side and end door thresholds for New York City Transit's new R-160 subway cars.  The project is currently in production and expects to run through 2008.

Both projects utilize state of the art de-icing and slip resistance technology.
